Az egyik leghíresebb és legismertebb színválasztás a taxik esetében a sárga. De vajon honnan ered ez a szokás, és miért pont a sárga? Ebben a cikkben mélyebben elmerülünk a sárga taxi történetében és eredetében.

A taxik története egészen a 19. századig nyúlik vissza, amikor is az első motorizált taxisok megjelentek az utakon. A taxik színe ekkor még nem volt egységesített, így mindenféle árnyalatban előfordulhattak. Az autóipar fejlődésével azonban az autókat gyártó vállalatok törekedtek a megkülönböztetésre és azonosításra.

One of the most famous and recognizable color choices for taxis is yellow. But where did this tradition come from, and why yellow? In this article, we’ll dive deeper into the history and origin of the yellow taxi.
The history of taxis dates back to the 19th century when the first motorized taxis appeared on the streets. At this time, taxi colors were not standardized, so they could be found in various shades. However, as the automobile industry developed, car manufacturers began to focus on differentiation and identification.
In 1908, an inventor and entrepreneur named Albert Rockwell founded a taxi company and painted all of his cars yellow. Why yellow? For Rockwell, the color choice was a simple yet romantic gesture: it was his wife’s favorite color. This led him to name his business the “Yellow Taxi Cab Company” in 1915.
Around the same time, in 1915, a Chicago car dealer named John Hertz also started his own taxi company. To make his fleet stand out from competitors, Hertz turned to a study conducted at the University of Chicago. The study revealed that yellow paint, mixed with a hint of red, was the most visible shade to the human eye from a distance. After learning this, Hertz painted all of his taxis yellow and founded the “Hertz’s Chicago Yellow Cab Company.” Later, in 1953, he founded the more well-known Hertz Corporation and used the same yellow for its logo.
Eventually, many New York taxi companies started painting their cars yellow, which led to an official decree in 1967 stating that all New York taxis must be painted the same yellow color. Specifically, it was to be “Dupont M6284 or equivalent,” as reported by The UI Junkie.
Another reason for the choice of yellow was that yellow paint holds up well against wear and corrosion, allowing taxis to maintain a fresh and easily recognizable appearance for longer. This durability was important due to the frequent use of taxis.
British researchers also contributed to this topic. In research conducted in the 2000s, they tracked more than 16,000 different taxis for three months. They found that yellow taxis were 5% less likely to be hit from behind during the day, and 19% less likely at night.
The iconic yellow taxi colors soon became ingrained in pop culture. In films and television shows, yellow taxis are often used so that viewers immediately recognize taxi scenes. Additionally, the yellow color in taxis suggests a certain professionalism and dedication to the occupation, contributing to the popularity of the color.
The results of the University of Chicago study that yellow is the most visible color were partly debunked a few years ago. In 2021, the Aiken Standard reported that, for the human eye, green is the most visible color—at least during the day. At night, however, green can blend with surrounding greenery (like trees) and other vehicles, making it less optimal for taxis. So, yellow still reigns supreme.
Despite the research findings, in most countries around the world, white is the dominant color when it comes to taxis. However, in terms of percentage, yellow remains the most common taxi color.
